Role Overview
Azzopardi Studio is an independent couture house led by Luke Azzopardi.
The studio is known for its academically grounded approach to design, narrative driven collections,
artisanal detailing, and a strong focus on Maltese and Mediterranean cultural references. The
Senior Dressmaker will be a central figure within the atelier, responsible for the execution of
couture garments from initial construction to final finish. The role requires exceptionally high
technical competence, a strong understanding of couture practices, and the ability to work
within a creative environment that balances historical research with contemporary design.
Key Responsibilities
- Pattern creation and adaptation based on designer sketches, fittings, and research material.
- Draping on the stand to develop forms aligned with the designer’s direction and the studio’s
aesthetic language.
- Construction of couture garments using advanced hand sewing and machine techniques
including boning, corsetry, internal structures, structural underpinnings, couture finishes,
closures, and fabric manipulation.
- Sampling of techniques and textiles including pleating, gathers, hand beading, appliqué,
fabric bonding, and custom textile experiments as required for each collection or commission.
- Conducting fittings with the designer and client ensuring accuracy, comfort, and elegance in
silhouette and movement.
- Supervising garment development from toile to final garment ensuring quality standards are
met at every stage.
- Collaborating with the artistic director, studio manager, and production team to manage
deadlines and ensure smooth workflow across the atelier.
- Maintaining clear documentation of patterns, alterations, and finishes for internal records
and future reference.
- Overseeing interns or junior dressmakers when necessary, providing guidance on techniques
and quality expectations.
- Supporting the preparation of garments for campaigns, défilés, exhibitions, and press requests including steaming, packing, and repair.
- Ensuring the upkeep of machinery, sewing equipment, and general studio workstations.
Essential Skills and Experience
- Minimum of five years experience in a couture, luxury, or high end bespoke atelier.
- Advanced knowledge of couture construction techniques with the ability to produce
garments of exceptional quality.
- Proficiency in both pattern drafting and draping.
- Ability to work with delicate and complex materials including silk, tulle, lace, and

- Strong problem solving abilities especially when developing challenging structures or
resolving fit issues.
- Excellent communication and collaborative approach.

Additional Information
- This role is based at the studio in Birkirkara, Malta.
- Hours follow the standard studio schedule of 8.30am to 5.00pm with additional availability
required during collection periods, client deadlines, and events.
